5 in Season Ingredients for August

It's the (hopefully hottest) final Summer month, and with it comes the Bank Holiday! With these 5 ingredients and recipes, you're sure to cook up a feast and make the most of it.

Beetroot

Beetroot is fresh and ready to be picked in August. Boiled or roasted, beetroot's sweet flavour is great used in sweet or savoury dishes. With the spectacular colour it brings to a dish, it's a staple on a summer dinner table.

For something a little different, try baking beetroot into your chocolate recipes, like this beetroot chocolate recipe from Nigel Slater (click here). The beetroot makes for a fudgy delicious cake. Otherwise enjoy in salads with creamy feta and fresh herbs.

Courgette

The versatility of courgettes make for a whole host of fun come August. We love stuffing them with a grain, nuts, cheese, and some spices before baking them in the oven. This recipe for stuffed courgettes (click here) is a brilliant place to get started.

Peppers

At their best, green, red, and yellow bell peppers are crisp and full of flavour when in season. Be sure to use each colour depending on it's flavour; the red and yellow are of course much sweeter and fruitier than their green counterpart.

This roasted red pepper with basil recipe is a delicious vegetarian dish (click here).

Peaches and nectarines

The perfect Summer fruits! Grilled peaches and nectarines make for a lovely summer dessert, or, if you're feeling adventurous, why not try making a peach bellini from scratch?

Damsons

Perfect for some foraging enthusiasts, damsons are coming into their own in August. Take a look at this damson jam recipe (click here) and this damson cobbler (click here) to get going
