Cake Decorating Trends for 2021

We know we're spending a lot more time baking at the moment than usual, and so we've compiled a list of some of the cake decorating techniques we've seen trending for you to try out!

Foliage

Decorating with fresh flowers and foliage is a lovely way to brighten up your bakes the natural way.

This orange and elderflower cake looks beautiful with the pink and blush roses. You can buy seeds to grow your own edible flowers, with some really beautiful colours to get you inspired! Sarah Haven have a lovely selection here.

Fault line cakes

If you fancy giving a fault line cake a whirl, look no further than this tutorial from the bakers at Hummingbird Bakery. Take a look here. The brilliant effect is achieved by creating deliberate crevices around the middle of the cake, and filling the crevice with sprinkles, flowers, and more the create a 'fault line'. It makes a great texture contrast with the smoothe frosting either side of it, and really is a showstopper!

Character cakes

Iconic character cakes have always been popular, and latest trends are showing cartoon versions of characters' faces becoming the whole cake! Beth's Bakes (@Bethsbakes) creation here shows a brilliant floral bunny! Unicorns are definitely leading the way in popularity, but we think this cheeky chappy would be ideal for Easter.

Buttercream painting

Gradient coloured frosting is key to painting effectively with buttercream. Think bold colour splodges smoothed out to create a layered, painted effect. This tutorial from Sugar and Sparrow has everything you need to know to get started. View it by clicking here
