5 in Season Ingredients for May

With the evenings starting to get a bit longer and brighter days upon us, you might even be able to eat al fresco in May. Read on for 5 of our favourite in-season ingredients this month, as well as some great recipes to cook with them.

Carrots

Carrots are looking beautiful and taste incredible this time of year, and as the perfect for vegetable for cooking and baking they really are wonderfully verstaile. For some of our favourite ideas, check out these carrot cupcakes, this carrot cake, our delicious roasted carrot soup, and these yummy carrot fries

Peas

The colour of spring in all it's glory. Some of our favourites: this perfect spring soup; a lovely pea risotto; and finally, if you're looking for a way to upgrade your avo on toast, try this mashed peas on toast on recipe

Samphire

Samphire is seafood's best friend, so we’d really recommend pairing it with some of your fish dishes. Make sure you don’t overcook it as it's nice to keep a slight crunch to its texture, and be sure to enjoy it with whole fish like sea bass and sea bream.

Lettuce and salad leaves

Fresh salads are in their element! They’ll taste their best this time of year and are especially delicious if they're picked straight from your garden. There's nothing like a refreshing salad to liven up your lunch in May.

Fresh herbs like chervil, chives, coriander, mint, oregano, rosemary and more

Fresh herbs will fill your kitchen with wonderful flavours as well as fragrances. Cooking with the fresh herb can feel a bit wasteful if you're buying them in packages from the supermarket, but with the weather this time of year you should find that if you plant a couple they'll start flowering before you know it. Perfect excuse to get green fingered.
